the Characters:

tag,you're IT!

hypeRory: all my pretty boys...

I started naming my gadgets in 2005 when I got my firsteXternal HardDrive, (XHD).His name was "Colossus" because he was huge. (100GB at that time was pretty respectable, and he had his own power supply and he was hot, like the X-Men character.)

I renamed my Desktop pc "Lazarus" soon after -- so-called because he kept on crashing and I'd have to reformat and resurrect him every few months. My motherboard was not a tomato, but it still sucked.

Then when I went to the States in 2007 I got "Orpheus", my Sony sports walkman. If you're not a mythology geek, Orpheus was a musician who went into the underworld to rescue his beloved.. but he ended up losing her anyway. See the music link? I loved this player, but nowadays his battery life is shot and like the doomed protagonyst, my Orpheus is on his way to the land of the dead.

"Spartacus" was my next XHD, and this time a portable one.
120GB for geekery, music, stock art files, etc. Basically everything I couldn't store in my work-issue laptop.

"Nautilus" was my 8GB Voyager flash drive... because the logo was of a Corsair and Nautilus was the big ship

"Galactus" is my latest XHD. 250GB.so-named because he is the devourer of worlds, or at least a world ofgeekery (music, movies, some anime)

"Nuntius" is the latin word for messenger, which is a perfect name for my Smart Bro Wifi modem. However, the service isn't the best and it being pre-paid is even worse, so recently I got a new dongle for my Sun Wifi plan (great service so far) and I named him "Phoebus" which is another name for Helios or Apollo, or the Sun-god.

"Cerberus" is a 2GB thumb drive, so-named because it was a mule for geekery between me and Inukai (Inu = dog in Japanese), and more recently I got "Nunimus" (4GB) for the same purpose. He was inspired to name his thumb drives"Phyxius" (God of flight) and "Optimus" (the Transformer). These 4 babies are sort of shared-custody and they transfer parentage on Tuesdays.

And then there's "Octopus",my laptop, so-named because when all these other things are plugged in, my laptop does look a bit like an octopus.

--This is Octopus keeping me company in the Chiang Rai airport after the CoFM conference in Thailand last summer.

Most recently, and this deviating slightly from my naming convention, is "Hercules" my new iPod nano, from my not-so-imaginary-boyfriend (who happens to remind me of the aforementioned Disney hero.) So the slight deviation from the "-us" suffix can be explained away by the "us-relationship"implied by the gift. Or maybe I'm overintellectualizing things again.

Anyway, so now I'm being wooed by apple products. Can't complain, but I sense this is the foreshadowing of my dreaded conversion to Apple-ation.
