hypeRory: all my pretty boys...

I started naming my gadgets in 2005 when I got my firsteXternal HardDrive, (XHD).His name was "Colossus" because he was huge. (100GB at that time was pretty respectable, and he had his own power supply and he was hot, like the X-Men character.)

I renamed my Desktop pc "Lazarus" soon after -- so-called because he kept on crashing and I'd have to reformat and resurrect him every few months. My motherboard was not a tomato, but it still sucked.

Then when I went to the States in 2007 I got "Orpheus", my Sony sports walkman. If you're not a mythology geek, Orpheus was a musician who went into the underworld to rescue his beloved.. but he ended up losing her anyway. See the music link? I loved this player, but nowadays his battery life is shot and like the doomed protagonyst, my Orpheus is on his way to the land of the dead.

"Spartacus" was my next XHD, and this time a portable one.
120GB for geekery, music, stock art files, etc. Basically everything I couldn't store in my work-issue laptop.

"Nautilus" was my 8GB Voyager flash drive... because the logo was of a Corsair and Nautilus was the big ship

"Galactus" is my latest XHD. 250GB.so-named because he is the devourer of worlds, or at least a world ofgeekery (music, movies, some anime)

"Nuntius" is the latin word for messenger, which is a perfect name for my Smart Bro Wifi modem. However, the service isn't the best and it being pre-paid is even worse, so recently I got a new dongle for my Sun Wifi plan (great service so far) and I named him "Phoebus" which is another name for Helios or Apollo, or the Sun-god.

"Cerberus" is a 2GB thumb drive, so-named because it was a mule for geekery between me and Inukai (Inu = dog in Japanese), and more recently I got "Nunimus" (4GB) for the same purpose. He was inspired to name his thumb drives"Phyxius" (God of flight) and "Optimus" (the Transformer). These 4 babies are sort of shared-custody and they transfer parentage on Tuesdays.

And then there's "Octopus",my laptop, so-named because when all these other things are plugged in, my laptop does look a bit like an octopus.

--This is Octopus keeping me company in the Chiang Rai airport after the CoFM conference in Thailand last summer.

Most recently, and this deviating slightly from my naming convention, is "Hercules" my new iPod nano, from my not-so-imaginary-boyfriend (who happens to remind me of the aforementioned Disney hero.) So the slight deviation from the "-us" suffix can be explained away by the "us-relationship"implied by the gift. Or maybe I'm overintellectualizing things again.

Anyway, so now I'm being wooed by apple products. Can't complain, but I sense this is the foreshadowing of my dreaded conversion to Apple-ation.

hypeRory: six weeks! (rory's brain burps)

After a few failed attempts to meet up in Makati over the last few weeks, Dawn and I finally met up unexpectedly at our friend Liz Claudio's bowling and pizza party last week. Our best laid plans never materialize, but stuff still happens.. which is really cool!

We have 6 more weeks to diet, exercise, save up, pack up, prepare, plan, dream and do all the other things we need to before our adventure. Dawn already elaborated this point in her blog (read below) and so I won't rehash that.

Over popcorn, Dawn and I discovered that we're relational opposites. She's really good at empathizing with other people, being understanding and sensitive to their needs. I'm really good at self-awareness, self-discipline, and self-control. (Yes... in other words, selfish.) It's going to be an interesting experiment to see how we can learn not just about each other, butfromeach other... Read More

hypeRory: Most Obnoxious Geek in the World

I finally found it!!! I've been racking my brains to think of where this image of the most obnoxious and geekiest geek and it's this guy. JP, the "bad guy" from the b-movie Grandma's Boy (Boy, did i watch a lot of crappy movies in college..) He's a game developer who dresses up like Neo (yes children, from the Matrix) and speaks in a robot voice for kicks. Annoying little bugger...

"The villain in this story is the Matrix-suited creator of the video game that Alex is working on. This robot voiced Neo worshipper is too uneven to be interesting and much too annoying to be funny."[source]

hypeRory: facelift

the headless chickens site has a new face!!!

News... well, this summer is the last summer the whole family is gonna be together for a looong time. Next sem, Chev's going to enter UP, I'm going back to Ateneo and Father Dearest is gonna be jetting off all over SE Asia for his study. So Josh and Ma are gonna be left in Baguio, all alone. Well, at least unless Pito ( preteen boy cousin. 'Nuff said. ) moves in for the year. All I will say on that matter is "Good luck keeping your sanity, mum. And don't count on me coming up to Baguo as often!"

And I just thought this pic was cute. So here...
